Steven ter Horst Chocolatier – Unley, SA

221D Unley Road, Unley, South Australia, 5061

I ventured into Unley on family business today and was able to catch up with a friend, colleague and brother for the first time in ages at the same time – and we decided (not all that hard) to give Steven ter Horst Chocolatier a try, after I had read a glowing review of the place on the Beanhunter by the Bobsta.  As with most places in Unley, parking is a hassle – but once that problem was sorted, we were greeted with an upmarket, yet comfortable atmosphere with long glass cabinets showing off all the wonderful chocolate surprises that await the adventurous – but I was here to try the coffee, as by reputation they are as passionate about their coffee as they are about their impressive chocolate. Today we were drinking a single origin columbian.

Latte Quality – Good – lovely flavour profile, just a bit on the weak side – I had hoped for some latte art, but nothing happening there.  My partner in crime ordered a double shot latte and was not convinced that is what was delivered – again, a bit weak.  A short while after our lattes arrived – the ristretto that I ordered also turned up – slight mess in the cup and saucer – but it began sweet (as it should) by ended with a harsh bitter aspect – luckily I had the latte to fall back on.

Cost – $3.30 for a regular – which is below the average, and I would imagine pretty good for Unley.

Coffee Supplier – The Coffee Barun

Fair Trade – Probably not – no mention of it in store (but then again, there was no mention instore who supplied the coffee either – I had to ask)

Customer Service –  – memorable – you talk about this place – this is how everyone should be, but few are – they may have even asked your name… – just a bit on the slow side of things – we waited about 10 minutes for the lattes even though we were the only 2 in the store when we ordered – and the ristretto came afterwards.

Special Notes – Really comfortable leather chesterfield sofa near the window is the choice place to sit – there was also a box of toys nearby indicating the place is child friendly – but there was only three other tables with three chairs each – so be prepared to order takeaway if necessary.

Venue Suitable for:

  • Quiet Chat,  Deep and Meaningful, and/or Study and Reflection – Probably not – only because of the limited seating – and they probably wouldn’t want someone camping out with books and what not – or having a deep and meaningful – although the soulful jazz music did make for a great conversation place.
