119 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide, SA, 5006
UR Caffe’ is not just another ‘brick in the wall’ of the burgeoning speciality coffee strip that is Melbourne Street. Bobby over at Adelaide Coffee said that the barista in residence here knew their place “and that’s behind a coffee machine” – which is high praise. Located just two doors down from First Pour, and next door to 9Bar – this UR Caffe’ is a must stop on any coffee crawl.
Sporting a very funky, unique – yet comfortable interior – including some nice abstract art on the exposed brick walls – Ur Caffe’ is a nice place, on a nice street to stop and watch the world go by.
35 Ocean Street, Victor Harbor, SA, 5211
Last week, I had made an effort to come and grab a coffee here at the recommendation of a congregation member – but when I walked past – the place was full and aesthetically it really did nothing for me – I commented that it seemed to be attached to the hardware store – so I went elsewhere, and discovered the Two Bees Café. However being back in the Harbor City once again, I thought that I would ‘suck it up princess’ and try out this other new place, so….let me begin my saying an emphatic
SORRY that I judged you on your appearance – serious hand slapping going on – because the experience was great! While the place does look like it is an adjunct of the Victor Harbor Hardware Store – and for good reason – because it is, the customer service was fantastic and the coffee was great. And once you are in there, the place is actually really nice and calming. So, again, ‘Sorry.’ According to the website:
Nestled in one of Victor Harbor’s oldest buildings, originally opened as The Coffee Palace which was built in 1886, the aroma of freshly ground coffee and sumptuous treats await. Relax in our pleasant surroundings and reacquaint yourself with old friendships – or begin new friendships as Judy and the team pamper to your every whim.
Cost – $3.50 – which is average for a regular sized latter – but this one came in an above average sized cup. You may notice in the picture that it is a double lined insulated cup, which voids that occasional latte burnt finger syndrome.
Coffee Supplier – Aroma Fresh
Fairtrade – no indication instore that this is Fairtrade coffee, although Aroma Fresh to offer a Fairtrade blend.
Special Notes – You get a free coffee caramel with your cup; breakfast is served until 2:30pm and they also serve light meals and lunches and a wide variety of sweet things – including the all important gluten free options.
Venue Suitable for:
- Quiet Chat, Deep and Meaningful, Study – Depending on what time of the day it is. I drove past before having lunch and the place was packed, both inside and out on the footpath tables, yet when I went back at just after 2pm – I was the only person there for a large period of time….
1 Moseley Square, Glenelg, SA, 5045
Located on the ground floor of the Town Hall Building, whilst also spilling out onto the boardwalk, Squisito has one of Adelaide’s most envious locales for wining, dining and lattéing (new word – go with it!). After a morning in the car, we ended up there having heard so much about their Gluten Free Pizza – and with my mother-in-law having traveled from overseas to try one – there was no stopping us (although Glenelg parking did its best). From what she said, Squisito make Australia’s (if not the world’s – as she did try one in Finland…) best Gluten Free Pizzas’ with a particular recommendation for the Sweet Chilli Chicken variety. She also made particular mention of their Gluten/Dairy Free Soy Hot Chocolate. Ambiance is wonderful, with unimpeded views of the jetty and azure blue of the gulf, and while the table service was not great – although this did improve greatly when a second hostess assumed duties (I assume from her happy attitude, that she was an owner) it is still worth a look. But now for the all important coffee review:
Latte Quality – Bad – the coffee was burnt and basically undrinkable. And while I was not in the mood to send it back, when the second hostess asked why the coffee wasn’t finished and was told, she happily refunded our money.
Cost – $4:00 for a regular, so a little pricey.
Coffee Supplier – Lavazza Coffee
Fair Trade – No indication in store, nor is there any mention by Lavazza on their website.
Venue Suitable for:
- Quiet Chat – During the week (not school holidays) definitely, particularly outside meal times – although lunch time today was quiet.
- Deep and Meaningful – again, Yes – see above – both inside and out – although in warmer weather the crowds, and therefore the noise levels are larger.
- Study and Reflection – no – too many noise/visual distractions – although there was wireless internet available if not there, then nearby.
